Ms. Quirarte's HomepageMeet Ms. QuirarteBorn in Harbor City, California and raised in Long Beach, Ms. Quirarte is an alumni of St. Barnabas Elementary School and Woodrow Classical High School where she was Senior Class President and on the Women's Volleyball and Water Polo teams. She received an Associate's Degree in Liberal Studies at Santa Barbara City College, where she was the captain of the Women's Volleyball team, then transferred to California State University Long Beach, where she received her B.A. Degree in Anthropology and Gender Studies. Ms. Quirarte spent her first two Winter Semesters at CSULB in Cambodia working with the Maryknoll Mission in Phnom Penh, that provided orphanages for HIV positive children. She worked full-time at the orphanages, teaching art to the HIV positive children there, and part time in a mother-to-child transmission clinic, where she and another student developed a culturally sensitive health education program for women. Before joining the IMHS faculty, Ms. Quirarte was granted a Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship to travel to Morocco and study Arabic, Women's Literature and gender roles. She is currently working with the UCLA Department of African Studies to develop a curriculum for Middle School students on North African Literature. Ms. Quirarte recently finished her Master's of Education at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Even while she is in the United States, she continues her work on fighting for women and children's access to health and right to education in the developing world. When she's not at school, Ms. Quirarte enjoys playing beach volleyball, surfing, going to the beach, and eating lots of sushi!
