Thank You to Reunion Alumnae!
On Sunday, May 5, Immaculate Heart saw the return of over 300 alumnae from celebrating years ranging from 1949 to 2014. And on Wednesday, May 8, IH's oldest living alumna from the Class of 1939 paid a special visit to campus.
Sunday's festivities included a welcome speech from Immaculate Heart President Maureen Shannon Diekmann, herself a celebrating alumna from the Class of 1969, and from Associated Student Body Vice President Hazel Drymon, Class of 2019. Then a special group of student volunteers presented a selection of Mary's Day performances for the assembled alumnae so that they could appreciate this year's theme of "Sister Through All Seasons" and reflect on Mary's Days past.
A group of liturgical dancers performed the theme setting dance, and senior Genesians Fiona Riley, Grace Egbe and Lauryn Chamberlain presented song and dance numbers.
But, even after the reunion itself, one alumna and members of her family made a special trip to visit campus. Unable to attend Sunday's Alumnae Reunion Day, Helen Shanks Cashen, Immaculate Heart High School's oldest living alumna returned to Immaculate Heart on Wednesday, May 8, to see her Class of 1939 banner.
She was accompanied by two of her daughters, Colleen Cashen McNally, Class of 1959, and Joanne Cashen Smith, Class of 1960, whose banners were also put up in the library in honor of their visit. Mrs. Cashen's youngest alumna daughter, Maura Cashen Glavin, Class of 1979, also had a banner displayed, though she was not available for Wednesday's visit, having already traveled to campus for the reunion.
As she looked at her banner, Mrs. Cashen, who is prominently displayed in her prom dress in an inset, shared memories of classmates as she picked out their senior portraits. As classes ended, several students stopped to greet and shake hands with the alumna, who welcomed the attention. "This is a wonderful school," Mrs. Cashen told them. "I had a great time here." Still vibrant at age 99, she left the campus singing the school's Alma Mater!
