IH Celebrates New School Year
Several hundred students and their families turned out Saturday for the Third Annual Back-to-School Luau, which capped the first full week of classes for both Immaculate Heart High School and Middle School.
The event, hosted by the high school’s Athletic Department and Parents Booster Club, welcomed new and returning students to an evening of both barbecue and a traditional luau dinner, performances by professional Hawaiian dancers, and fun and games, including a dunk tank and a bounce house.
Immaculate Heart officially opened its doors for instruction on August 14. Students launched their first day of school by renewing their commitment to academic integrity, which included gathering in discussion groups before signing their names to Immaculate Heart’s honor code. “This tradition reflects Immaculate Heart’s legacy of developing women of great heart and right conscience,” IHHS Principal Naemah Morris said.
Days later, the entire student body, representing both the high school and middle school, came together for the first liturgy of the school year. Presiding at the Mass, Father J.T. Tanner of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hollywood encouraged students to find inspiration in the passion and love of Mary, the mother of Jesus and Immaculate Heart’s patroness, who never faltered in the face of trials she endured.
Even before classes got under way, the IH campus was abuzz with activity as orientation programs prepared all new students for a successful school year. Immaculate Heart High School’s orientation celebrated the arrival of 129 freshman students in the Class of 2023, as well as five sophomore and three junior transfer students. During the Middle School’s orientation, teachers joined student leaders to welcome 74 sixth graders, six seventh graders and four eighth graders into the IHMS Panda Family.
Along with fall sports teams and club organizations, IH students are also now immersed in their course work, including the high school’s new Digital Video Productions class, and such projects as building pinhole cameras in the “Engineer Your World” class and learning the Java programming language to develop mobile phone applications in the Advanced Topics in Computer Science course.
