IH Honored at Archdiocese Christian Service Awards

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles honored senior Sophie Stuecken and math teacher Abel Gutierrez at the annual Christian Service Awards Mass, held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 12.
The Christian Service Awards celebrate students and teachers who demonstrate exceptional commitment to service in their communities. This year, Sophie was selected to represent Immaculate Heart because of her deep reflections on social justice, her compassionate heart, and her exemplary volunteer work. While balancing her classwork and extracurricular activities, Sophie has volunteered extensively with Homeboy Industries, an organization dedicated to providing hope, training and support to former gang members and previously incarcerated people. And she went above and beyond by taking leadership of Immaculate Heart's partnership with Homeboy's Christmas Carnival, which provided outreach and seasonal gifts for families in need.

At the service, math teacher Abel Gutierrez was also presented with the 2024 Archdiocesan Teacher Christian Service Award, which recognized his 24 years as a teacher in Catholic education and his generous assistance at retreats, Masses, cultural assemblies and other student life events. Immaculate Heart salutes Gutierrez as a mission-driven educator who encourages students to develop leadership skills and embrace their creative gifts. His unwavering support for both coworkers and students has greatly enriched Immaculate Heart’s school community.

Congratulations to Sophie Stuecken and Abel Gutierrez!
