Mission Statement

Immaculate Heart is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school dedicated to the intellectual vitality, spiritual growth, moral strength, and social-emotional development of its students. Immaculate Heart fosters academic excellence and creativity in an environment that empowers students to become women of great heart and right conscience. Students embrace a life-long commitment to compassionate service, leadership, and humanitarian values.

Tradition and Innovation

In its spirit and its style, Immaculate Heart combines a mixture of the traditional and the innovative; of discipline and freedom; of play and work; of concern for things of the heart as well as of the mind; and of a readiness to create and to celebrate.

Young women are challenged to think clearly, to choose wisely, and to acquire those values and inner resources that characterize mature, loving and productive members of our society.

Immaculate Heart is a private, Catholic, independent, college preparatory school dedicated to the intellectual, spiritual, moral, and social development of young women.

Immaculate Heart defines its mission as two-fold:

First, to share in the teaching ministry of the Catholic Church by creating a learning environment where students can, with Mary as their model, mature in their faith as they reflect on their special roles as members of the Christian community. Basic to this faith is the belief that God is the source of all life. The dignity of each person comes from being created in God's image, redeemed by Jesus, and by receiving His promise of resurrection. The Gospel calls all people to truth, justice, honesty, service and compassion.
Second, to develop a significant foundation for the ongoing acquisition of skills, knowledge and values which will enable students to function not only as intelligent, informed and contributing members of society, but also as young women whose self-esteem, spirituality and life of faith motivate them to realize their own unique potential. This makes it possible for young women to discern carefully and to choose wisely those values which contribute to their own and others' authentic well-being and happiness.
Immaculate Heart strives to fulfill its mission by its commitment to a Christian philosophy, its stated goals, its program of instruction carefully designed to meet the increasing needs of women in the contemporary world, its liturgies and days of recollection, its activities, and its policies and programs, which foster the spiritual, intellectual, social, and aesthetic development of the student. In addition, Immaculate Heart's mission is facilitated by a competent, caring, and supportive administration, faculty and staff who have utmost respect for the uniqueness of the individual and the religious and ethnic diversity of their students.

While Immaculate Heart recognizes that parents are the primary educators of their children, the school assists parents by helping their daughters to develop in such a way that they will become women of great heart and of right conscience; knowledgeable and concerned about the earth and the global community in which they live; creative as problem-solvers; capable of building on their appreciation of and acquired skills in the humanities and sciences; aware that learning is a lifetime endeavor; and convinced that, ultimately, all must develop within themselves a capacity for integrity, wisdom, humor, joy, peace and love, so as to "make gentle the life of this world."

The following goals support the school’s philosophy:

  • to help students to mature in their faith, to refine their own consciences, and to achieve a sense of moral power, as women, that will enable them to think and judge clearly and to live responsibly;
  • to help students to experience the satisfaction and joy that can be found in the learning experience, and to develop an appreciation of and a readiness to pursue life-long learning;
  • to help students develop an understanding of and appreciation for the economic, religious, political, ethnic, cultural, and social diversity of the world, and to recognize the responsibility that each person has to contribute to the well-being of the global community and to the care of the earth;
  • to help students to develop an appreciation of and proficiency in language, science, mathematics, and the arts;
  • to help students to develop leadership skills and a life-long commitment to service;
  • to help students to experience the joy of being a member of a nurturing school community through collaborative learning, school-wide celebrations and play; and
  • to help students to be competent and self-confident users of technology and wise consumers of information.
An independent, Catholic, college preparatory school for girls in grades 6 through 12, Immaculate Heart has been located on a beautiful hillside property in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles since our founding by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1906. We celebrate more than a century of nurturing the spiritual, intellectual, social and moral development of students as they distinguish themselves as women of great heart and right conscience.
