Traditions & Celebrations

THIS IS WHERE WE CELEBRATE.
The Immaculate Heart school year is filled with traditional days of celebration. Through these events and activities, students are given the opportunity to create and celebrate together as a community. Many of these activities are unique to Immaculate Heart and are coordinated by our student councils.

Special Days Throughout the Year

  • Welcome Day

Welcome Day is a celebration full of song, dance and revelry dedicated to welcoming all our new Pandas into the Immaculate Heart family. In the Middle School, Big, Middle and Little Sisters get to know each other through games and races, and begin to build that community spirit that is so important here.

In the High School, each grade level chooses a class theme and works together to put on a short skit, along with a song and dance, about starting the new year and greeting their new classmates. The festivities are followed by a potluck lunch on the quad, where old friends and new can enjoy each other's company.
  • The WALK

The WALK is Immaculate Heart's annual fundraiser, and the funds raised go directly to improving the student experience — whether through facility upgrades, technological advances or direct financial aid.

At the culmination of the fundraising period, the whole school community walks, jogs and runs on a course through our scenic Los Feliz neighborhood.
  • Pep Rallies and Spirit Weeks

Throughout the year, both the Middle and High Schools cheer on our student athletes with pep rallies, and engage in friendly competition through games and spirit weeks with themed costume days.

At the end of the year, the team with the most spirit points wins the coveted spirit trophy and bragging rights for next year!
  • Holiday Celebrations

In addition to our uniquely Immaculate Heart celebrations, we also mark holidays throughout the school year with festivities and prayer services.

On Halloween, our Middle School students coordinate and run a carnival full of games and activities for primary grade students from a local elementary school. The day is full of excitement and candy, as well as community service. In the High School, students come to school in costume and hold a party on the quad during an extended lunch, complete with contests and games.

For Christmas, both schools put on their own Christmas programs, featuring performances, songs and dances. In addition to the fun, we also hold a prayer service to honor our Catholic faith.
  • High School Dances

High School students enjoy a number of dances and social events during the year, which are open not only to IH students but also to guests from other Catholic schools.

The Welcome Dance is a fun and casual event held on campus at the beginning of the year, perfect for celebrating the beginning of school with friends. Our Winter Formal takes place off campus, and has been hosted in recent years at the Omni Hotel. It is a more elegant dance, open to students from all grade levels and their guests, and includes a Winter Formal Court. Finally, Prom caps the year with a truly special evening organized by our junior class for the juniors and seniors and their guests.
  • Junior Ring Ceremony

In this special ceremony, our juniors are presented with their class rings and officially join the ranks of the upperclasswomen alongside their senior sisters. This meaningful event is open to friends and family.
  • Mary's Day

Mary's Day is one of the most special celebration days of the school year. It is dedicated to honoring our patroness Mary through a theme chosen every year to highlight one of Mary's aspects.

Originally called Queen's Day, the day's traditions were transformed into an explosion of art and student engagement in the days of Sister Corita Kent, and we carry her tradition forward by transforming the campus with student-created artwork and decorations. During the day, we join prayer and reflection with song and dance, finishing with a picnic lunch on the quad.
  • Graduation

The year comes to a close with graduation. Our Middle School graduation is held on campus, with room for family and friends to celebrate their rising high school freshmen.

Our High School graduation is held at the world famous Hollywood Bowl in a beautiful ceremony with white dresses and tuxes and red roses.

  • We're the Pandas

Just like the stark contrast between the panda's black and white fur, at IH, we too are a study in interesting juxtapositions: kind-hearted and fiercely driven. Intensely studious and joyfully playful. Independent spirits within a community of support. We band together in support and solidarity for those who need it most, whether it's our fellow sisters or underserved populations in Los Angeles.
  • What's the Alma Mater?

The Alma Mater is our school song, first sung by the Class of 1934, and to this day it is sung after every school event.

    Raise on high your standard,
    Sing to Alma Mater.
    Immaculate Heart, we greet you,
    Every loyal daughter.
We’ll lead you on to victory,
    Never will we fail.
For the glory of the blue & white,
    Hail, our Alma Mater, Hail!
  • Western & Franklin

Immaculate Heart was founded in 1906, which means that we have been at this address even before Western and Franklin Avenues were established!

The hill we are located on used to be farmland and grazing fields for livestock — a far cry from the bustling interchange it is today. In the photo above, which dates back to 1914, you can see the little track that will one day become Western Avenue.
  • Stars with Heart

Our alumnae ranks include several women whose talent and impact have been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Honorees include Pat Carroll ('44), beloved for her work on stage and as the voice of Disney's Ursula; Mary Tyler Moore ('55), an icon of television and film; actress Gigi Perreau ('58); supermodel, entrepreneur, and television personality Tyra Banks ('91); and Charlotte Caffey ('71) with her groundbreaking band, The Go-Go’s.
A Catholic, independent college preparatory school for girls in grades 6 through 12, Immaculate Heart has been located on a beautiful hillside property in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles since our founding by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1906. We celebrate more than a century of nurturing the spiritual, intellectual, social and moral development of students as they distinguish themselves as women of great heart and right conscience.
